LIFE of (In)Famous Literati

The literature-related news clip of the day, brought to my attention by the Huffington Post: LIFE Magazine now boasts a slide show with images of Famous Literary Drunks & Addicts.

Peopled with the likes of Charles Baudelaire, Ernest Hemingway, and Edna St. Vincent Millay, the gallery contains  photos of the individuals along with descriptions of their substance(s) of choice and related quotes. For example…

Charles Baudelaire (1821 – 1867):
Absinthe, Booze, Opium
“Always be drunk … Get drunk militantly. Just get drunk.”

There are some fascinating photos and quotes, but when it comes to the purpose or value of this exhibit, your guess is as good as mine. I suppose it goes to show that, whatever Roland Barthes may say, and for good or ill, the author is still very much alive in the American imagination.

For making those of us who, after a long hard day of writing, who like a stiff drink to make ourselves feel better are not alone?

SO many of my favorite writers are on this list, it’s incredible.

And my favorite is the intoxicant of choice for Hunter S. Thompson– “everything”

Good point. And I did notice a certain trend in the names… 🙂
